Lift Truck Battery Safety
The big industrial sized batteries utilized to run electric forklifts must be charged frequently and properly maintained. Safety procedures must be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is important to check fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is essential for anybody working with a forklift battery. Full protection includes safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both skin and clothing from other residue or leaked acid is to wear an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging area must be an emergency eyewash station. The path to the post must not be obstructed and an injured employee must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging area in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are not allowed near a charging area and battery. Never allow objects like for example matches or lighters to be used while an employee is checking the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is vital to keep the battery charging place properly ventilated. The recharging process can release fumes. These gases are both explosive and poisonous.
