A stock picker, also called an order picker is a machine which is quite similar to a forklift. It enables the driver to utilize forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some things, and this feature is something the lift truck does not offer. Usually, order pickers are powered by electricity. These type of machines are mainly used in a warehouse environment. Most often they are used for transporting pallets and completing certain tasks in the shelving and stocking department.
The order picker operator sits up on a platform where they operate the controls. These controls help to direct the machinery forward, backward or steer it from side to side. As soon as the operator has positioned the unit in place the blades can be lifted up to the required level which makes it convenient for the operator. Like for example, if the needed materials, are situated on a shelf that the operator cannot reach, then entire platform is capable of being raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
When the order has been picked, the platform is lowered back to its original position. Then the order picker can be driven to its next load. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker while the platform is raised, however, some companies might have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers in the name of safety. An order picker can also put pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers could be used to finish these specific jobs at several companies instead.
