History
Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started during the year 1919. The company was first founded by Anton Raky, an engineer. Raky was a pioneer in oil drilling and modern drilling technology. The company's original name was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
During the year 1937, the cornerstone for SMAG was laid when the manufacturing facility was obtained by the Salzgitter Group for constructing drilling equipment. In the year 1986, the company bought the grab product division from Peiner AG. Soon after, Peiner was developed into an international brand in the following years. Now, SMAG is the world's market leader, using grabs for worldwide cargo handling applications, agriculture and waste disposal.
